A traveller’s guide to visiting Singapore

Singapore is a thriving small country and it is one of the most expensive places in the world to live. When people think of Singapore, the beautiful skyline and Marina Bay comes to mind but this country is more than that.

Singapore is packed with history, it has cultural significance and it is a truly cross-cultural society.  If you venture past the tourist trap, you will find the beautiful Arab Street, China town, Little India neighborhoods’. There is a lot to explore (the sights, sound, smell and food) will delight your senses.

Singapore  has successfully made nature an integral part of its makeup and every city needs to learn from this. We need to bring nature into our urban areas, let greenery into our spaces and work with nature to improve the quality of our daily living.

The highlight of Singapore for me is the indoor cloud forest and it is simply a magical greenhouse housing exotic plants from around the world. Walking through  the forest will literally give you the bumps and this place will wrap you in its beauty.

Where to stay in Singapore:

  • Marina Bay is where Singapore’s iconic and important landmarks are located. This area overlooks the harbour, it is central and the most luxurious hotels in Singapore are located here.
  • Orchard Road is the luxury shopping district of Singapore and surrounding the shopping boulevards are streets, filled with mid to high end hotels. This is a popular tourist area to stay and you will get everything you need here.
  • The Quays is a lively area filled with bars, shops, restaurants, and nightclubs. The area is close to Marina Bay, Chinatown and it is the nightlife center of Singapore.

What to do in Singapore:

  • Gardens by the bay – this is one of the most popular landmarks, it is set on reclaimed land. While here take a look at the Supertree Grove and the cloud forest. You can book tickets here.
  • OCBC Skyway – enjoy panoramic views of the marina bay on this walk either during the day or at night.
  • Sentosa Island – is a world class resort (loaded with adventure and entertainment) located on the Southern coast of Singapore. While here, have a relaxing time on Palawan beach.
  • The notable neighbourhoods of Kampong glam (Muslim quarter), Little India and Chinatown, all have their distinct food, history, architecture which will delight.

Verdict: Singapore should be on everyone’s list and while accommodation is expensive, food is affordable and the city deserves a visit.

Pro-tip: You can combine a trip to Singapore with a trip to other Far East countries and the connecting flights are cheap.
